The 13th edition of Habitat Film Festival starts from May 17 – 27 at the India Habitat Centre hosts a handpicked selection of the Best of Indian Cinema 2017-2018, a pan Indian sweep of more than sixty national award winning and critically acclaimed feature films and documentaries.
The salient features of the Festival include Retrospective Segment on visionary Malayalam director KG George, Tribute segments celebrating the pioneering contributions of late actor and producer Shashi Kapoor (1938-2017) with the screening of his select films, and one that brings into focus the pan Indian legacy of late actress Sridevi (1963-2018) with a screening of one of her early films. Post-screening interactions with directors, collateral sessions in the form of Master Classes by Vishal Bhardwaj, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Rekha Bhardwaj, panel discussions involving film scholars, film journalists & critics, etc. will infuse the festival with an exciting measure of contemporaneity.
The Habitat Film Festival will be inaugurated by film scholar par excellence, Aruna Vasudev, Founder-President of NETPAC. Bina Paul, Artistic Director of the International Film Festival of Kerala, will be in conversation with Aruna Vasudev on the opening day (Thursday, 17th May at 6:30 pm at the Stein Auditorium). This will be followed by the screening of the opening film, Drishtikone (Bengali), directed by Kaushik Ganguly at 7:30 pm. An immersive 10 days await the cinephile till the 27th!
One of our favorite and internationally acclaimed as well as recent National Award Winner “Village Rockstar” will also be screened at the festival.
The Village Rockstars is a 2017 Indian Assamese language coming-of-age film written, edited, co-produced, and directed by Rima Das, who is a self-taught filmmaker. The film premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
Also this year the Habitat festival will presents HARPER @ CINEMA, a first-of-its-kind event organized by an Indian book publisher, that celebrates cinema and books with masterclasses, conversations, music and more.
HARPER @ CINEMA is a great platform for cinema enthusiasts to interact with the ‘Masters of the Game,’ showcasing an eclectic gamut of speakers including Gulzar, Vishal Bhardwaj, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Nandita Das, Tisca Chopra, Gautam Chintamani, Shubhra Gupta, and Kaveree Bamzai. There will be a performance of R.D. Burman songs sung by his biographers Balaji Vittal and Anirudha Bhattacharjee.
